The haunting, intermingaled ruins of Tynemouth Castle and Priory stand on a headland above the River Tyne. Between them they offer a fascinating opportunity to witness what this once great complex must have been like when constructed centuries ago.
The surviving parts we see date mostly from the 11th and 14th centuries, there is the remains of a 15th century gatehouse and barbican, and parts of the curtain wall enclosing the priory, these stretch for 3200 feet in length. The priory succeeded an earlier building of the 7th century.
This is a beautiful, atmospheric site which is well worth seeing. The buildings are in the care of English Heritage and are open throughout the year.
